Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Hall has paid tribute to Sir Doug Ellis, who died on Thursday 11th October, aged 94.
The charity trust, which has been managing the locally listed venue for almost two years, had been ready to announce the former Aston Villa chairman, Sir Doug as their first major donor this week.
Chairman of the Royal Sutton Coldfield Community Town Hall Trust, Richard Mason has spoken of the legacy Sir Doug left to to the town in the final months of his life.
“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I am extremely saddened by the news of Sir Doug’s death. He loved Royal Sutton Coldfield and we are very appreciative of his generous support and encouragement of the Town Hall. Through his generosity we have been able to commence the first of the many phases of our Town Hall’s redevelopment including significant enhancement of our new bar area, which is about to begin construction.
“Kickstarted by Sir Doug, our refurbishment fundraising will not only begin the journey of restoring our Town Hall to its former magnificence, it will also develop it for future generations as a significant community facility for both Suttonians and many from the surrounding area. We will be naming the new bar in honour of Sir Doug with our thanks.”
