Our Place Community Hub held its first Charity Golf Day on Thursday May 17th
at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club.
The event was hailed a huge success, attracting teams from across the Midlands including from businesses, Amazon, Lloyds Bank, and Cookes Furniture.
The day was organised by Sutton Coldfield Golf Club’s Phil Dunn with support from Kelly Round of Our Place Community Hub after a chance meeting last Summer.
Phil’s daughter, Marie Hunter, worked as a volunteer mentor at Our Place for a number of years before she tragically died of a brain tumour in February 2017.
Phil wanted to meet with Kelly and all the staff to see what it was that Our Place did. It was during that meeting when the idea of a charity golf day in memory of Marie materialised and the work to organise it began.
The day was not only a success with the weather, it was a success all round raising more than £3,700.
All the teams enjoyed tea and coffee with bacon butties before the event, with a halfway house set up for during the day.
Golfers competed for a variety of fantastic prizes as they made their way around the course, including first, second and third places, as well as prizes for teams who achieved a hole-in-one on all par three holes, nearest pins and longest drives.
Following the tournament, guests enjoyed a sumptuous two course meal followed by a raffle with yet more prizes up for grabs, including Aston Villa football shirts and signed footballs, Under Armour golf shoes, Cleveland Golf Bags, and more.
Special guests were former Aston Villa captain Stylian Petrov and former Birmingham City goalkeeper, Maik Taylor who brought their golfing skills along and joined the proceedings.
All funds from the day will be donated to Our Place Community Hub, which provides valuable advice and support for the local community across a range of issues, including mental health, wellbeing, caring and unemployment.
The event was so successful that Phil & Kelly are now considering making this an annual event. If you would like to take part next year please keep a watchful eye on the Our Place website for information.
Local retailer, Cookes Furniture, showed its support for the Our Place Community Hub cause by sponsoring the charity golf day.
Based in Erdington, Cookes Furniture regularly support various local charities, including The Cancer Support Centre and the Great Midlands Fun Run, which the company has sponsored since 2003.
Vanessa Hoe, Marketing Director at Cookes Furniture, said:
“It is an honour to have sponsored the Our Place charity golf event at Sutton Coldfield Golf Club. As an independent, family-run business, we are dedicated to supporting a variety of local causes throughout the region, and are delighted that the day has helped to raise such a significant amount of money for this worthy charity.
“It was an extremely fun and competitive day, with a host of wonderful prizes up for grabs.”
