A distracted delivery driver who hit and killed a woman while he lit a cigarette was jailed today, Friday 12 January, after pleading guilty to death by dangerous driving.
Tomas Marcinkus struck Clair McKenzie while driving along Sutton New Road, Erdington in the early hours of 11th November 2016.
The 35-year-old victim was found collapsed at around 3.45am with serious head injuries. Despite the best efforts of the ambulance service it became apparent that nothing could be done to save her life and she died at the scene.
Marcinkus, aged 29 from Wolverhampton, left the scene but he was quickly identified following an investigation from the Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) and arrested a few days later.
He admitted death by careless driving at an earlier hearing and was jailed for 12 months at Birmingham Crown Court today.
Marcinkus – who said he had not realised there was a person on the road – was also banned from driving for two-and-a-half years.
